What is Drive-Up Storage?
Drive-up storage is probably the most popular storage type available today. It’s typically what comes to mind when most people think of self storage. Many people don’t even know that other types of units like climate-control or indoor exist. When you pass by most storage facilities you will see big garage doors lining the buildings differentiating them from other businesses around them. This is probably why so many people just assume they are the only choice.
Depending on what you want to store, drive-up storage may be the best option. Drive-up storage units are great for someone who is looking for convenient access to their storage unit quickly. With drive-up storage lockers, you will be able to pull your moving truck right up to your unit, unload your belongings, lock the door and go. Since this type of unit is located outdoors you will be exposed to the elements of the weather while unloading so it is best to prepare for your move on as dry a day as possible. Storing any wet items leaves you susceptible to mold and mildew, especially if you will not be revisiting your unit for a while. If you do end up moving in the rain, make sure to wipe everything down.
Another consideration while storing in a drive-up unit will be the temperature your items will be exposed to. Most drive-up storage lockers are not climate controlled, so as the weather gets hot or cold the atmosphere inside your storage unit will change with the climate. This is why it is not recommended to store antiques, solid wood items, oil paintings, electronics, and musical equipment in an outdoor drive-up unit. Below is a list of items that are ideal for drive-up self storage units:
- Car storage
- Boat storage
- ATV & bike storage
- Short term storage without antiques
- Outdoor power equipment storage
- Landscaping and construction materials storage
- Patio and outdoor furniture storage
- Jetski and water ski equipment storage
