Customer Testimonials

  • “Immaculate and secure. A real pleasure.”

    ~Susie Farber
  • “Anna and the folks at Guardian have been just incredible. They run a clean, new facility that’s safe, well-lit and easily accessible. We rented a unit from them in order to de-clutter our house while staging it for sale. Anna walked us through all our storage options, showed us around the property, and secured a clean 10′ x 15′ for us. We chose a climate-controlled space. Even with the unit’s interior-facing entrance, access was easy. Guardian built their facility with wide hallways and doorways, and equipped each entrance with carts for moving items in and out. During our home sale process, our basement flooded in the 2013 Colorado Flood. We moved everything from our house into Guardian, which stayed completely dry during the flood! Anna helped us find a second, smaller unit to accommodate some of our additional belongings. This unit was located in a different part of the property, yet was just as nice as the first one we had rented. Finally, upon the sale of our house, we were able to arrange with Guardian to allow movers access to our units while we closed on our sale. Anna and Guardian Storage really came through for us in a time of need. I would recommend their outstanding, professionally-managed facility to anyone!”

    Thanks a million! :)

Building an Outdoor Kitchen: A Complete Guide to Alfresco Dining

Why an Outdoor Kitchen is the Ultimate Backyard Upgrade

As spring unfolds and the warm breeze returns, outdoor spaces become the hub for family gatherings, backyard parties, and relaxing evenings under the stars. One of the most transformative upgrades you can make to your home’s exterior is building an outdoor kitchen.
Not only does it enhance the functionality and beauty of your backyard, but it also brings social, culinary, and even financial benefits that make it a worthwhile investment.

The Benefits of Building an Outdoor Kitchen

Building an outdoor kitchen offers more than just aesthetic appeal. It provides tangible advantages, including:

  • Enhanced Entertaining: With a full kitchen outdoors, you can cook and mingle with guests at the same time.
  • Increased Home Value: Outdoor kitchens are a popular feature that can significantly boost your property’s resale value.
  • Expanded Living Space: Extend your usable living space without costly additions to your home.
  • Better Indoor Air Quality: Keep smoke, heat, and cooking odors outside where they belong.

With these benefits in mind, let’s dive into the essential steps to help you create a show-stopping outdoor culinary oasis.

Step 1: Thoughtful Planning for Your Outdoor Kitchen

Before breaking ground or purchasing appliances, start with a well-thought-out plan that addresses every detail.

Key Factors to Consider

  • Location: Choose a spot close enough to your home for convenience but distant enough to prevent smoke from entering indoors.
  • Size: Assess your available space to determine how extensive your setup can be.
  • Usage: Decide if your kitchen will be used for casual family meals, large gatherings, or a little bit of both.
  • Budget:Set a realistic budget that covers appliances, materials, furniture, and installation.
  • Style: Ensure that the design complements your home’s architecture and backyard vibe.

Sketch It Out

Draw a rough sketch or hire a designer to create a detailed blueprint of your dream layout. A visual plan helps eliminate guesswork and sets expectations for both design and functionality.

Step 2: Selecting the Best Outdoor Kitchen Appliances

The heart of any outdoor kitchen lies in its appliances. Choose wisely to ensure longevity and satisfaction.

Must-Have Appliances for Outdoor Kitchens

  • Grill: The star of any outdoor kitchen. Options include gas, charcoal, electric, or hybrid grills.
  • Refrigerator: Outdoor-rated refrigerators keep beverages and perishables cool, even in extreme temperatures.
  • Sink: A sink with access to hot and cold water makes food prep and clean-up more convenient.
  • Pizza Oven: Bring the pizzeria experience home with a gas or wood-fired oven.
  • Side Burners: Allow you to cook side dishes while grilling main courses.
  • Ice Maker: Perfect for keeping drinks icy cold on warm days.

Tips for Choosing Appliances

  • Opt for stainless steel models for durability and weather resistance.
  • Look for energy-efficient appliances designed specifically for outdoor use.
  • Make sure appliances fit within your overall design and workflow.

Step 3: Choosing Durable, Weather-Resistant Materials

Your outdoor kitchen needs to withstand rain, sun, snow, and temperature changes. Selecting the right materials is critical for longevity.

Ideal Materials for Outdoor Kitchens

  • Countertops: Granite, concrete, and stainless steel are excellent choices.
  • Cabinetry: Stainless steel, marine-grade polymer, and teak offer outstanding weather resistance.
  • Flooring: Non-slip surfaces such as textured concrete, porcelain tile, and natural stone are both stylish and safe.
  • Roofing Options:Pergolas, gazebos, and awnings can shield your kitchen from the elements.

Choosing the right materials not only extends the life of your kitchen but also makes maintenance much easier.

Step 4: Designing an Efficient Outdoor Kitchen Layout

Functionality is key when creating your outdoor kitchen. A well-thought-out layout ensures ease of movement and efficient food preparation.

Layout Essentials

  • The Work Triangle: Place the grill, sink, and refrigerator within close proximity for maximum efficiency.
  • Prep Areas: Allow ample counter space for food preparation and plating.
  • Storage Solutions: Incorporate cabinets, drawers, and storage bins for utensils, cookware, and condiments.
  • Lighting: Install task lighting for cooking and ambient lighting for setting the mood.
  • Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation, especially if your kitchen is under a structure or near the home.

A strategic layout will make cooking outside enjoyable rather than stressful.

Step 5: Creating Comfortable Outdoor Seating Areas

An outdoor kitchen is best enjoyed with plenty of comfortable seating where friends and family can relax.

Outdoor Seating Ideas

  • Dining Table and Chairs: Ideal for sit-down meals.
  • Bar Seating: Add a counter with stools for casual dining and conversations.
  • Lounge Area: Outdoor sofas and chairs create a cozy vibe.
  • Fire Pit Seating: Perfect for chilly evenings and late-night conversations.

Choose weather-resistant furniture with cushions made from outdoor fabric to maintain comfort and style year-round.

Step 6: Adding Personal Touches and Fun Extras

Personalization transforms a standard outdoor kitchen into a true backyard retreat.

Creative Additions

  • Outdoor Fireplace or Fire Pit: Adds warmth and ambiance.
  • String Lights: Instantly create a festive and cozy atmosphere.
  • Outdoor Speakers: Keep the party going with your favorite playlists.
  • Outdoor TV: Ideal for watching sports games or movie nights.
  • Herb Gardens: Grow fresh basil, mint, rosemary, and more within arm’s reach of your cooking station.

Small personalized touches can have a big impact on how your space feels.

Step 7: Maintaining Your Outdoor Kitchen for Longevity

Once your dream outdoor kitchen is complete, proper maintenance is essential to keep it looking and functioning its best.

Maintenance Tips

  • Clean appliances and surfaces after each use.
  • Cover appliances and furniture when not in use.
  • Inspect for rust, mold, or wear periodically.
  • Winterize plumbing before freezing temperatures hit.

Regular upkeep not only preserves the appearance of your kitchen but also protects your investment long-term.
